Chloe's Success - How Quitting Smoking Changed Her Life
5 min read
38 year old Yoga Instructor, Chloe* completed the Stop-In-7 Smoking Cessation Treatment Plan over 16 months ago at Alex's London clinic. We caught up with her to see how she’s getting on with her new life as a non-smoker, and to see if she had any advice for people just starting out on their journey to quit smoking.
*Names have been changed at the client’s request.
Alexander James, Heal Therapist: How has becoming a non-smoker changed your life over the past year?
Chloe: Oh, it’s dramatically changed my life, it's impacted all areas! It doesn't consume so much of my personal time. I'm not embarrassed like I used to be — I don’t carry a level of shame around that people are going to know I'm a smoker.
A: You’re a yoga teacher, exercise is a big part of your life. How has becoming a non-smoker effected this?
C: It's easier to do my job because I feel healthier I don't get out of breath when I'm teaching or practicing, so yes! It’s dramatically impacted my work and my general level of fitness for the good!
A: Looking back to March 2019. How were you feeling in the first two weeks after treatment?
C: I was feeling excited, for a new beginning. Nervous about the longevity of it, whether I was going to be able to sustain it, but I was really excited and hopeful.
A: Did you have any problems sustaining being a non smoker?
C: No. None at all!
A: Which of the skills you were taught during the process did you find most helpful and why?
C: I found cue-controlled relaxation — which uses the word ‘Peace’ — really helpful in stressful situations, especially when I’m driving. When I recognised the signals within myself that I was getting a bit stressed, where I would usually reach for a cigarette, I could use the skills, repeating the word Peace and squeezing my thumb, and I felt immediately calm. I could use it anywhere. Nobody would know I was doing it, but it was really powerfully and rapidly effective and it just took the heat out of those moments.
"It’s dramatically impacted my work and my general level of fitness for the good!"
A: How did you deal with friends or other people smoking in social situations?
C: For the first six weeks I stuck to not being around anyone who was smoking for the most part, whenever possible. I avoided social situations where people were smoking and I found that was really good for getting me through that first phase, so I definitely would recommend that. Now when I'm around people that smoke it doesn't bother me, in the sense that I don't want a cigarette, but it does bother me that it’s gross! Ha ha! I don't want to be around it anymore.
A: You were smoking around 15 cigarettes a day. What did you put all that money towards?
C: Oh, it's all stacking up in my account. I'm going to put it towards a deposit for a place, so eventually it will all add up to something that will also be life changing for me.

A: How has your mental health been affected by becoming a non-smoker?
C: It’s been an absolute game changer! I feel so much more stable on a day-to-day basis, I don't have outbursts of stress and I feel much more level with my emotions. I’m much more in control; I feel like my body is able to regulate my emotions way more than it was before.
"I'm going to put [the money saved] towards a deposit for a place, so eventually it will all add up to something that will also be life changing for me."
A: Stress is a part of everyday life. How do you deal with stress now, instead of reaching for cigarettes?
C: Stress is not really a massive part of my day-to-day anymore! It doesn't impact me in the same way, because I am able to regulate my emotions better now.
A: Why do you think that is?
C: I think it’s because I don’t have nicotine anymore. I'm not on the stress and reward rollercoaster anymore, so I find my stress levels are much lower in general.
A: Do you have any words of encouragement for our clients who have just started the Sop-In-7 Smoking Cessation Treatment Plan?
C: Just, stick to the plan because it works. Use the tools that you've been given because they really see you through when you have a brief moment of weakness. They will see you through and past them, to the point when you don't even feel them anymore.

I had wanted to give up for ages but always failed until I came across this treatment.
Before treatment my day was geared around when I was going to have a cigarette and I would rush home sometimes to have one or rearrange my day around them. I only smoked when I was alone as I felt ashamed and the smell upset others. I can honestly say that the Stop-in-seven treatment was excellent and the support wonderfully reassuring. It was all encompassing about how one was making oneself ill but also encouraging about how much better one would feel after giving up. One of the hardest aspects of the week was when we had to change the brand of cigarette. Oh how I craved for my own brand of cigarette I had smoked for 30 years. As I write this I think I can now call myself a non-smoker and it is amazing I have given up. I had wanted to give up for ages but always failed until I came across this treatment. Physically I don’t cough anymore and I can smell better and am eating healthier and enjoying it more. Emotionally I feel stronger clearer and realise I am proud of myself for eventually stopping the habit which I never thought I would. I would recommend Stop-in7 treatment to anyone trying to stop smoking. It is well organised extremely supportive and it works. Thank you.
I have tried various methods including hypnosis sessions previously, but to no avail.
