Bringing The Clinic Online; How Heal Got Started
Heal is changing the way therapy is delivered and experienced. Let’s take a look at how this pioneering digital platform originated and get to know the people behind it.
Two Brothers, One Idea
Heal Therapies was created by two brothers, Alex – a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist and Mindfulness-based Therapist, and George – a creative designer with expertise in digital and UX design. Combining their skillsets, Alex and George created Heal, the online therapy platform integrating techniques from hypnotherapy, mindfulness and C.B.T to help clients break through their everyday mental health challenges.
Heal began as a simple idea in late 2019 with the notion that everyday therapeutic treatments for anxiety management, phobias and habits, like nail-biting and stopping smoking, should be accessible and affordable to everyone, everywhere, at any time.
The outbreak of Covid-19 further emphasised the need for a platform like Heal. As lockdown restrictions came into effect in March 2020, Alex was no longer able to offer his clients the therapy they needed face-to-face in the safe and welcoming environment of his London-based clinics.
Although therapy sessions using platforms such as Skype and Zoom were proving useful and effective, it was clear that a space existed for a new way to deliver treatment plans in a more streamlined and easy to use digital format.
Heal’s journey had begun.
Kicking Up A Media Storm With …inMind
It was also at this time – during the first wave of the pandemic – that Alex teamed up with Slee Parish, a fellow therapist and senior nurse practitioner at a London NHS Trust, to create NHS inMind; a free-to-use web platform providing mental health resources for NHS employees. Hospital staff were provided with an easy-to-access, virtual, mental health toolkit, created in just seven days. These resources included stress reduction techniques, guided meditations, hypnotherapy recordings and mindfulness exercises to help frontline workers find a place of calm during these challenging times.
NHS inMind received an unexpected amount of positive feedback from users including senior consultants, doctors and nurses. They reported how much the resources had helped them tackle their exhaustion and anxiety in such overwhelming circumstances.
“I think it’s really great, easy to understand and use.”
“Working as a mental health nurse for the past 13 years, it is so refreshing to be able to easily access such modern and helpful methods that will be invaluable for my own mental health that really work.”
– Mental Health Nurse, Dorset Healthcare
“I saw that you had put the sleep hypnosis up on the website and have used it twice. I would like to give you feedback on it but have to admit that I didn't get to the end of it on either occasion as I fell asleep within about 10 minutes – which probably is the best feedback I can give!”
– Clinical Psychologist
“this is amazing well done… I've just chilled out completely… You should send this to the trust for everyone… Thank you x”
– Nurse Specialist
Aiming to help more people in need, Alex and Slee went on to partner with the NSPCC to offer a similar digital package to the workforce of this national children’s charity. This website too was met with touching reviews and gratitude from users.
“Alex developed NSPCC inMind to support NSPCC staff and volunteers with their well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic through developing tailor-made mindfulness tools and resources [...] On a personal level I've been interested in mindfulness for years, but I've never heard anyone explain it to me so simply and with such passion and insight, plus back it up with the tools to make it so accessible and easy to apply to every day life! Alex is so humble about his skill which makes him easy to connect with and a pleasure to work with and talk to - the ingredients for a truly life-changing therapist. I'd highly recommend Alex's introduction to mindfulness course for anyone looking to dip their toe in to mindfulness and it's benefits."
– Liane Smith, Head of Volunteer and Employee Engagement and Development, NSPCC
These positive experiences with the NHS and NSPCC proved something. Not only did people like using the online resources, but they were reaping the benefits from them. Providing therapeutic tools and techniques online in video format, accessible by users as and when they needed it most, really worked!
Yet the challenge remained. How could the original concept of late 2019, delivering comprehensive therapeutic packages to as many people in need as possible, be brought to life? George, with expertise in digital and user experience design, was keen to team up with Alex to find a creative solution.
The aim was to translate the treatments Alex had delivered successfully in his face-to-face clinics into an easy-to-access, digital package, accessible to people across the country. From city workers confined to their front rooms ‘working from home’, to remote countryside farmers who might have limited access to local therapy. Our mission is to provide everybody with the opportunity to experience the life changing benefits of therapy, regardless of their location, logistical limitations or personal circumstances.
Now, several months on, our first treatment plan is up and running! You can undergo Alex’s Stop-In-7 Smoking Cessation therapy from the comfort of your own home.
